As GRT we have been operating in Somalia since 1996 with socio-health, mental health and countering gender-based violence projects.
Thanks to our privileged point of observation on the ground in contact with the local population, it was possible to see the need to operate not only in Somalia, but also to create a health bridge with Italy for particularly serious and vulnerable cases.
So every year, together with the Somali diaspora association AMEB Mother and Child Care, we make it possible for Somali children with incurable heart conditions to arrive in Milan. The girls and boys who arrived in Milan yesterday will be operated on at Niguarda Hospital by the medical team led by Dr. Stefano Marianeschi, thanks to a special fund for humanitarian health interventions from the Lombardy Region.
All this is possible thanks to the collaboration with the Italian Embassy in Mogadishu and the Hormuud Salaam Foundation, which is supporting part of the logistical costs and the patients’ return home.
